SUBTLETY

The more I do this, the more I appreciate subtlety in handling.

This past weekend, as handlers were running the Amateur Water Blind, I spoke with one of my training partners about subtlety in handling.

When you run a blind, there are four primary variables you can use -

1)   Whistle modulation - you can vary the tone and volume of your whistle

2)   Cast - you can vary your arm movement, and your body movement in your cast

3)   Non-verbal v. Verbal - you can choose to go verbal, and when you do, you can choose to vary the tone and volume of your voice

4)   Timing - after you blow your whistle, you can choose to cast immediately, or you can choose to sweat your dog some

When you need to make a line correction up front, why blow your whistle loudly?  When you do so, you increase the pressure on your dog, which can diminish your momentum on the blind.  Instead, try blowing your whistle calmly and gently.  I find it soothes the dog when you do so.  In contrast, if you have stopped the dog several times, because it is refusing to take your cast, then blow your whistle hard and sharp.  When I do so, I am telling my dogs, "OK, let's cut the crap."

Another thing I notice, is that too often handlers try the same cast over and over again.  At a Field Trial, if the cast doesn't work, try another.  Don't keep on giving straight back after straight back ... go from straight back to angle back to over ....  Change your casting to fit what your dog is doing in the field

When necessary, go verbal.  Remember to control your voice to fit the occasion.  If you are giving the dog permission to get on the point, say "back" in a reassuring tone.  If you are demanding that the dog get off the point, be authoritative.  Be careful to keep fear, and anxiety from your voice.  I am certain the dogs sense it and lose confidence in you.  Be calm and deliberate in all that you do.

Timing.  Change your timing to fit the situation.  If you are making a simple line correction, there is no need to sweat the dog.  If you are trying to get off a big point on the water blind, and dogs are getting eaten alive on the point, take your time, sweat the dog, let him get nervous, then cast deliberately into the water with a firm, authoritative voice.

In short, play with the four variables - whistle, verbal, cast, and timing - try being more subtle in your casting and the results may surprise you.
